Got Medicare? Stay healthy, save money

Multnomah County info sessions offer tips on wellness benefits, reducing out-of-pocket costs

The Multnomah County SHIBA (Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance) program is holding “Making the Most of Your Medicare” information sessions at neighborhood libraries. These hour-long meetings are focused on managing prescription costs and getting the most from Medicare health insurance.

Now that it’s mid-year, many have hit the “donut hole” on their Medicare Part D prescription plans and are paying large amounts for their prescription drugs. Those with limited incomes may be eligible for programs that reduce pharmacy costs as much as $4,000 per year. Other options can help people regardless of their income.

Avoiding preventable illness is another way to save money. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fewer than half of adults age 65 and over are up to date on basic wellness tests for diabetes, cancer, and heart problems. Studies show many people don’t know which screenings are best for them, don’t see the doctor unless they’re ill and don’t think their insurance covers these tests.

“The great news is that since 2005, preventive screenings are part of everyone’s Medicare coverage,” said Janet Bowman, SHIBA program coordinator. “They’re built into your contract with your heath plan. Making the most of your health insurance benefits just makes sense.”

The following information sessions are scheduled in August:

.• Thursday, Aug. 9, 6 p.m., Gresham Library, 385 N.W Miller Ave., Gresham.

• Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2:30 p.m., Rockwood Library, 17917 S.E. Stark St., Portland.
