Are you able to enjoy your yard and garden?

Ask the Contractor: Darren R. Williams

Darren R. Williams is owner of All Generations, a general contracting business based in Clackamas and serving the tri-county area. Williams is a certified aging in place specialist (CAPS) and welcomes questions from homeowners about making their dwellings more accessible as they age.

Do you have a handicap-accessible yard? Are you able to comfortably enjoy your outdoor surroundings? One of the most important elements is the ease of entry and exit in and out of your home. Properly constructed ramps or comfortable steps with solid handrails are a necessity for your comfort and safety. Now is an excellent time of year to have an accessible yard for your enjoyment and for years to come.

Adding solid and level paths around your home or to areas you would like to access can create a more inviting yard. Paths should be at least 36 inches wide and should have a curb and traction to make those using walkers or in a wheelchair more comfortable and safer — especially if there is a slope in the yard so they cannot navigate off of the path.

Curbs should be at least 2 inches in height. Many choose to make the curb wide as they place their potted plants on them for easy access.

Another excellent idea is constructing raised planter boxes. This is especially comfortable for those in a wheelchair or who like to sit while they garden. Also consider constructing a planting table where you can comfortably sit with all your plants and supplies and not have to strain and overwork yourself.

Remember, working in the yard has many other benefits: peace of mind, mental stimulation, exercise, etc. There is something to be said for putting your hands in the earth, planting a seed and watching it grow.
