IRCO Events: April 2013

The nonprofit IRCO (Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization) Senior Services offers the following support groups and other events during April at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. For more information or appointments, call Leslie or Rachel at IRCO Senior Services, 503-988-6073.

* IRCO blood pressure screening — Monday, April 1 and 15, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free blood pressure checks. No appointment necessary.

* IRCO Diabetes Support Group — Monday, April 1 and 15, 1-2:30 p.m. Free, for seniors 60 and older, led by a registered nurse.

* IRCO Foot Care Clinic — Thursday, April 11 and 25. Clinic includes foot soak, toe nail trim and file, foot massage, sanding/smoothing of callous skin and corns, and reduction of thick fungal nails. Cost: $35. Call 503-988-6073 for appointments and more information.

* IRCO Low Vision Group — Thursday, April 18, 10-11:30 a.m. Talk with other seniors about eye disease and coping with your diagnosis. Discuss any new treatments that are available and any problems you may have. Free.

* IRCO SHIBA Program — Every Wednesday, 9 a.m. to noon. The Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) Program uses trained volunteers to help people with Medicare make health insurance decisions. SHIBA volunteers can help you select a Medicare prescription drug plan, find out if you’re receiving all possible benefits, compare supplemental health insurance policies, evaluate your need for long-term care insurance, file an appeal or insurance complaint. * IRCO Senior Law Project — Thursday afternoons. The Senior Law Project offers seniors the opportunity to get free legal advice from volunteer attorneys in 30-minute sessions. To qualify, you must be age 60 or older or married to someone who is 60 or older; be a resident of Multnomah County or have a legal issue in Multnomah County; and be a U.S. citizen or legal resident. Certain exceptions for domestic violence victims apply. Call 503-988-6073 to make an appointment.
