Visitors passing through East Multnomah County will eventually have a new place to rest their head.
Marriott Hotels & Resorts plans a new Courtyard by Marriott, a mid-priced option for both business travellers and families. The 91-guestroom, four-story structure is sited on an approximately 2-acre lot in Gresham's Interstate 84 corridor district.
Construction has not yet begun, as the hotel's building permits are still under review by Gresham City Hall staffers.
Builders have set aside space for 92 parking spots, plus room for nine cyclists to lock up in a sheltered enclosure. The building will stand about 45 feet tall with a three-foot parapet, according to submitted blueprints.
Located west of 181st Avenue and north of I-84, the hotel complex is one of two hotels being planned for the area surrounding U.S. Bank's Columbia Center. As previously reported by The Outlook, a four-story, 122-room WoodSpring Suites budget hotel is planned off Northeast Sandy Boulevard with an entrance on 181st Avenue.
The Gresham Hospitality Group LLC purchased the land from U.S. Bank for $733,000 in 2011, property tax records show. It's currently hardscaped as a parking lot, and four small trees will be removed during construction. The assessed value is $465,000, according to Multnomah County officials.
"I gave a talk last time describing the advantages to the community. I do feel it complements the buildings in the neighborhood," testified civil engineer Chris Feely during a Gresham planning commission meeting last year. "Also there is a need for hotel space, especially (during the summer), hotels are full."
The area surrounding Exit 13 already offers a variety of hospitality options, including Hampton Inn, Days Inn, Extended Stay America, Rodeway Inn & Suites and a Four Points by Sheraton.
There are more than 1,100 Courtyard by Marriott hotels operating globally. Its rooms generally offer desks, couches and free internet access.
