Kinnaman event features the Youth Philharmonic
Aloha school will host special concert event announcing tribute to former music teacher
Renowned Portland pianist Michael Allan Harrison and the Wind
Quintet from the Portland Youth Philharmonic will perform Thursday, May 31, at Kinnaman Elementary School at 7 p.m. to celebrate the announcement of the Portland Youth Philharmonic's Victor Frederick Walton Memorial Scholarship.
Victor Walton, who died in May 2011 from Lou Gehrig's disease, was an elementary school music teacher at Kinnaman, who was relentless in his efforts to connect every interested student with a musical instrument. Walton's participation in PYP from his early teens through his 21st birthday played a major part in developing his love of music and his wish to become a teacher.
A friend and supporter of PYP has given $8,000 on a matching basis to establish the initial foundation of $16,000 with an ultimate goal of $50,000 or more toward this scholarship fund.
In making the announcement, PYP Board President Jan John said,'There is no question that Victor would be thrilled to know that a scholarship program has been created in his name that will allow other students the opportunity to play in PYP by providing financial aid or funding private lessons from qualified music teachers. It's sure to touch community members in the greater Portland area whose school districts have limited music education due to dramatic budget cuts.'
The performance is free. However, donations will be accepted. Reserve a seat at victorwalton.eventbrite.com.
Kinnaman Elementary School is located at 4205 S.W. 193rd Ave. in Aloha.
