Miles Vance sweeps awards in sports coverage category

The Beaverton Valley Times earned a dozen awards in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest, including a first place in general excellence.

This honor represents the highest award presented to Oregon newspapers and the best examples of the industry. Judging for the category was based on news, reproduction excellence, advertising enterprise, editorial comment, general appearance, makeup and style, photos and graphics and thoroughness of local coverage.

The news team also received awards for reporting, page design and photography, as well as for its educational coverage of how middle schools are taking a stand against bullying and a “Faces Among the Budget Cuts” series profiling staff and programs on the district’s chopping block in 2011.

The Times serving Tigard, Tualatin and Sherwood, which shares some staff members, received an additional 10 awards.

The awards were presented at a special ceremony Friday at the Resort at the Mountain in Welches.
