Two killed, two injured in Cooper Mountain crash

Two people were killed late Friday night in a head-on collision between a pickup and a motorcycle on Southwest 175th Avenue on Cooper Mountain.

Washington County sheriff’s deputies said the collision killed 24-year-old Jolene Berstecher of Beaverton and 31-year-old Keith Lawson of Aloha. Lawson was driving a motorcycle and Berstecher was his passenger.

The collision injured two other people in a pickup.

Deputies said the collision happened at about 11:52 p.m. July 27 as a motorcycle traveling north on 175th Avenue accelerated quickly to pass two vehicles in a no-passing zone and slammed head-on into a 1990 Dodge Dakota driven by 34-year-old Earnest Shottenkirk of Hubbard. The impact threw Lawson and Berstecher from the motorcycle.

The motorcycle damaged the truck so badly that Shottenkirk and his passenger, 29-year-old Sheila Shottenkirk, had to be cut out of the pickup by Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue crews.

The county’s Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team is investigating the collision.
