Memorial sprouts for Tigard man killed in Afghanistan
A 22-year-old soldier from Tigard killed Wednesday during an enemy attack in Afghanistan was a 2008 graduate of Beavertons Southridge High School.
U.S. Army Pfc. Andrew J. Keller played running back and defensive back for the Skyhawks varsity football team. A memorial that sprouted in the past two days near his parents Tigard home included a Southridge football helmet and notes of sorrow from friends and neighbors.
Keller was killed during a battle near the town of Charkh in the Lowgar region south of Kabul. The U.S. Department of Defense said Keller was killed when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.
He was part of the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team stationed in Caserma Ederle, Vicenza, Italy.
Arrangements have not been announced for a memorial service or a funeral service.
