Drug turn-in event set for Saturday

In a partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Beaverton Police Department will provide the public with an opportunity to drop off expired or unused prescription medications on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Beaverton City Hall, 4755 S.W. Griffith Drive.

Any unwanted prescriptions or over-the-counter medicines will be accepted.

Illegal drugs, medical waste or trash, thermometers, syringes or needles, IV solutions, lotions, creams and inhalers will not be accepted.

The event aims to reduce the amount of prescription drugs and medicines in households, where they can be obtained by family members or friends for improper use or abuse, said Officer Mike Rowe, police department spokesman. Furthermore, usual methods for drug disposal, including flushing them down toilets and throwing them in the trash, pose potential safety and health hazards.
