Witness intervenes as woman dragged across motel parking lot

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in locating what deputies describe as a violent fugitive who witnesses say broke into his estranged wife’s hotel room, attacked and attempted to abduct her on Dec. 17.

Sheriff’s deputies were called at 12:51 p.m. to a disturbance at the Shilo Inn, 9900 S.W. Canyon Road in West Slope. by: WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - Washington County Sheriff's deputies seek James Griffin, 34, who witnesses say attacked and tried to abduct his estranged wife on Dec. 17.

Deputies arrived at the motel to find that a 31-year-old woman had been attacked by her estranged husband, Aaron Bryce Griffin, 34.

According to witnesses, Griffin came to the hotel looking for his estranged wife and her male companion. He used a pry bar to attempt to gain entry to the motel room through a hallway door. Unable to open that door, he went around to an exterior door, which he was also unable to break through, smashed out a window with the pry bar and entered the room, said Sgt. David Thompson, a sheriff’s office spokesman.

Griffin allegedly attacked his estranged wife and her friend with the heavy steel pry bar. Her friend was able to escape, but Griffin grabbed his wife by her neck and dragged her out of the room. Outside, a bystander heard the commotion and saw Griffin dragging the woman along the pavement. The 23-year-old man said he saw Griffin drag a woman across the parking lot and try to force her into his car. He said he wasn’t sure if Griffin was armed or not, but he took an opportunity to intervene when he saw it.

While Griffin was struggling with his wife, both of them fell to the ground. The witness grabbed Griffin, held him down and told the woman to run. Once she ran back into the building, he let Griffin up and backed away. Griffin got in his car and drove away. The woman sustained deep scrapes and cuts to her knees and elbows and multiple bruises over her body, Thompson said.

Griffin allegedly stole the green 2003 Dodge Durango he was driving from the car dealership where he works. The Oregon license plate on the sports utility vehicle is DA4029BS.

Deputies have not been able to locate Griffin in the past two weeks, Thompson said. He has not returned to work nor contacted his family. Griffin faces accusations of several felony crimes, including burglary, assault and kidnapping.

Anyone with information about Griffin’s whereabouts is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 503-629-0111.
