Witnesses say Saturn driver ran stop sign before truck struck its passenger side

A Beaverton man and a Portland woman were killed in a two-vehicle "T-bone" collision on Sunday on Highway 219 south of Hillsboro.

Washington County sheriff's deputies found Robby Lee Welch, 29, of Beaverton, a passenger in a 1997 Saturn driven by Tasha Marie Ann Smith, 24, of Portland, deceased in the car. Smith died later at a local hospital while receiving medical care for her WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE. - Witnesses say the driver of this 1997 Saturn ran a stop sign into the path of a pickup truck, whose driver couldn't stop before hitting its passenger side.

Deputies responded around 3:24 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Southwest Hillsboro Highway/Highway 219 and Southwest Simpson Road in unincorporated Washington County. Witnesses indicated seeing Smith driving eastbound on Simpson Road approaching Hillsboro Highway. She ran the stop sign and was proceeding across Hillsboro Highway when a 1989 Dodge Dakota pickup truck driven by Jerry Lee Hinds, 62, of Hillsboro, and traveling north on the highway, struck the Saturn on its passenger side, said Sgt. David Thompson of the sheriff's office.

Hinds was transported to Tuality Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

There was no indication of alcohol involved in this crash.

Friends and relatives of the victims said Welch and Smith were returning from a day of fishing when the crash occurred.

The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team responded to investigate the crash. Hinds will not face any criminal charges or citations.
