Beaverton will host a Freedom Fun Run, a 5K walk and run presented by Uberthon, to take place on July 4.

All participants will receive a "pretty substantial medal," said organizer Randy Wilder. Participants in the kids' free race will all get a ribbon.

The event has even received an informal stamp of approval from Philadelphia, Pa., mayor Michael A. Nutter, who wrote to wish Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle luck in the city's "inaugural Freedomthon running event."

"It is the hometown of America, so to speak," Wilder said. “It’s a neat, novel idea to tie into the race.”

Proceeds from the race will benefit the Beaverton Police Activities League.

"Portland PAL closed their doors a few months ago, because funding was an issue," Wilder explained. "(PAL) is almost at that point."

Wilder said 200 to 300 participants are expected at the event.

The race begins at noon, with a start and finish line in front of the Beaverton City Library, 12375 S.W. 5th St., and is followed by the kids’ race. Registration for the race is $30 per person, or $35 with a race shirt. Family and group rates are available. The kids’ race is free.

All races will be followed by a strawberry shortcake feast that is complimentary to participants.
