Public invited to march in heels

Warner Pacific College steps up to sponsor the 2013 Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event Saturday, presented by the Sexual Assault Resource Center, whose mission is to promote social justice by eliminating sexual violence in the community through education, support and advocacy.

The walk will take place on Saturday at Beaverton City Park at Southwest Fifth Street and Hall Boulevard. Registration opens at 9 a.m. with the event beginning at 10 a.m.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a distinctive event in that participants of both genders are encouraged to complete the 1-mile course while wearing high-heeled shoes. At the walk, high heels serve as a symbol of the way many women are objectified in society. This physical experience provides an opportunity for men to put on a pair of those same shoes and think critically about the way boys and girls are raised differently.

Equally important to making an impact on the participants, is the attention that this choice of footwear will draw from passersby during the march, opening the door to community dialogue about gender and sexual issues, organizers say.

The resource center is a nonprofit organization founded by two sexual assault survivors in 1977 that operates around the clock.
