Beaverton police officers want to remind parents of the importance of monitoring children's time on the Internet.

Here are some tips about keeping your child safe while online:

• Have the computer in a family area where you and others can see the monitor.

• Check the computer's history often to see what sites your child is visiting.

• Have the password for all social network and email accounts your child uses.

• Have your child "friend" you so you can monitor activity.

• If your child has a smart phone, limit the applications that can be installed and check the phone often.

• Set parental controls on the computer and/or router.

• Talk to your child about the dangers of meeting people online.

"This incident was discovered because the victim's mother felt something was wrong and began checking online and on her daughter's cellphone," Rowe said. "It is important for us to be reminded of the dangers associated with the Internet when it comes to our children."
