Publication ranks Beaverton safest city in Pacific Northwest

Based on statistics published by the CQ Press, the city of Beaverton is the safest city in Oregon and the entire Pacific Northwest. The city improved its national ranking this year in "The City Crime Rate Rankings 2014: Crime in Metropolitan America" by 13 positions, moving to 42nd from 55th in the publication's 2013 rankings.

CQ Press calculates the crime rate rankings of cities and metropolitan areas each year based on six crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor-vehicle theft. The rankings include all cities of at least 75,000 residents.

“This is a tremendous honor,” said Beaverton Police Chief Geoff Spalding. “The brave men and women of the Beaverton Police Department are committed to staying diligent to keep Beaverton safe. Our city has always invested in public safety. This strong commitment continues to pay dividends as this recent announcement attests.”

Spalding indicated the safe city recognition will help the department continue its campaign to help educate the public about what he and other officials see as the city’s crucial need for a public safety center. The Beaverton City Council reviewed new plans in December to renovate City Hall at 4755 S.W. Griffith Drive into a new, improved law enforcement center to address safety and security concerns. The city’s Visioning Advisory Committee will host a forum at the Beaverton City Library, 12375 S.W. Fifth St., on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m., where Spalding will discuss the plans for a remodeled public safety center.

“With City Hall moving this summer to its new location at The Round, we have a great opportunity to retrofit the Griffith building for use as a public safety center,” said Mayor Denny Doyle. “We can repurpose it, consolidating all of our police functions and facilities into one location. This will create a safer and more efficient police and emergency management operations center.”
