Investigators seek information on other alleged victims of John Richard Black

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office’s child abuse detectives are searching for additional sex abuse victims following the arrest of a Bethany man.

John Richard Black, 39, of Bethany, was arrested on numerous counts of sexual abuse, child abuse, sodomy and drug-related charges based on Washington County grand jury indictments. Black turned himself in at the Washington County Jail on Sunday, March 2.by: WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - Bethany resident Jonathan Richard Black faces numerous sex abuse charges based on weeks of investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The Department of Human Services contacted deputies in September 2013 regarding a complaint that Black had engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with a young boy. Deputies investigated the complaint, and the child abuse detectives began assisting with the case.

Over the past few months, detectives have processed evidence and interviewed a large number of people with knowledge of, or were potential victims of Black, said Sgt. Bob Ray, sheriff’s office spokesman. It is believed the abuse occurred mainly at Black’s residence, where detectives said Black would lure the minor victims prior to the alleged abuse.

Five confirmed male victims have come forward, and detectives are following up on additional reports regarding Black. Detectives believe there are additional victims of unreported crimes that Black committed.

On Feb. 26, a Washington County district attorney presented this case to a grand jury, which handed down indictments and issued a warrant for Black’s arrest.

Black is lodged in the Washington County Jail pending a $1.7 million bond. He is charged with three counts of first-degree sex abuse, two counts of second-degree sex abuse, two counts of third-degree sex abuse, first- and second-degree sodomy, four counts of first-degree luring a minor, using a child in display of sexually explicit conduct and numerous drug-related crimes, Ray said.

Detectives are seeking the public’s help regarding this case. Anyone with information is asked to call the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at 503-846-2500.
