Washington County Sheriff's Office hosts police K-9 Trials


It’s that time of year again to check out the Washington County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Trials competition and the Kids and K-9‘s Safety Fair.

The event takes place Saturday, June 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Washington County Fair Complex, 873 N.E. 34th Ave., in Hillsboro.

For the ninth year in a row, the sheriff’s office K-9 Unit will hold trials for area police dogs and their handlers to compete against one another for bragging rights and a first-place trophy. The event is free, and children are encouraged to attend, but pets are not.

Staff from the Bonnie Hays Small Animal Shelter will be on hand. Guests are asked to bring along any size bag or cans of unopened premium dog or cat food to donate.

The K-9 Trials will run from noon to 3 p.m., including:

• Area searches for suspects and evidence

• Fastest dog

• Suspect apprehension

• Extraction of suspect from vehicle

• Handler (officer) protection.

The Kids and K-9’s Safety Fair will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include exhibitors Washington County Animal Services; Life Flight; Metro West Ambulance; Portland Pit Project; Hillsboro Fire; Portland General Electric; Washington County Land Use and Transportation Dump Truck and Bike Safety Program; and Washington County Sheriff’s Office Special Teams, Remotely Operated Vehicle Team, Marine Patrol boat and a Traffic Team motorcycle.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
