Farmers Market to accept donations for Tualatin Valley Gleaners

Patrons asked to bring food and hygiene products to donate on Saturday

The Beaverton Farmers Market will hold its annual summer food drive to support the Tualatin Valley Gleaners on Saturday, July 19, during the market's regular hours of 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

All fresh food purchased from vendors that day, or canned food brought to the market, located at Beaverton City Park at Southwest Fifth Street and Hall Boulevard, can be donated.

Market customers are urged to bring not only canned foods and hygiene products for donation, but to purchase fresh food from the vendors and donate it to the Gleaner's booth, said Bette Sinclair, spokeswoman for the market.

Comprised of low-income members of the community collaborating to promote food security, Tualatin Valley Gleaners is a supplemental food program serving the greater Washington County Area to provide food, aid and other assistance to the low-income, disabled, children and elderly throughout the Tualatin Valley.

"We are able to help people help themselves bring quality nutritious foods into their households in a dignified way," said Heather Thompson, spokeswoman with the Gleaners. "Our people feel as if they have worked and accomplished providing for their families through this wonderful program. Just last quarter we served 3,312 individuals. This shows the need is still very high in those needing assistance. This is our chance to make a difference in so many peoples lives."

The Gleaners' website provides a way to sponsor a family in need and fill out a tree registry for organization volunteers to come and harvest backyard fruit trees.

"The Summer Fresh Food Drive is the best way to donate directly to Washington County residence in need," Thompson said. "All food and non-food collected goes to a local family in need immediately."

All funds are kept local and pay for the operation of the Gleaners, as there are no employees or high overhead to pay.
