Somewhere at the intersection of crime, romance and comedy, police say, you'll find Eric Fleury.
Fleury allegedly stole a van on Tuesday and later ditched it — but not before stealing a phone and snapping a selfie of himself with flowers to show his girlfriend.
The Washington County Sheriff's office arrested Fleury. The owner of the van got its vehicle and phone back. Officers did not say how well the flowers went over with the girlfriend.
The incident — which seemed straight out of a Hollywood romantic comedy — began around 1:23 p.m. Monday when deputies responded to the report of a stolen Frontier Communications van in the area of Southwest 85th Avenue and Jay Street in Aloha.
Deputies found the van ditched a few blocks away. A phone and tablet computer were missing from the van and deputies began to track the stolen phone.
That led them to Fleury, 34, who was nearby, and to a phone lying on the ground near him.
When the phone's owner unlocked it, deputies discovered Fleury had used the stolen phone to send his girlfriend photos of himself holding flowers, which he also allegedly stole from a roadside memorial nearby.
Fleury then used the phone to log into his Facebook Messenger account and told his girlfriend he had stolen a van, was running from the police, and was not going to jail, according to deputies.
Since the course of true love never did run smooth, Fleury has been charged with unlawful use of a vehicle, second-degree theft, possession of heroin, and abuse of a memorial to the dead.
