Man killed in 185th Ave. bicycle accident

Investigators try to determine what happened in 2 a.m. mishap

A 56-year-old bicyclist was killed early Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while he was lying in the roadway. The incident occurred on Northwest 185th Avenue, just south of Northwest West Union Road, about 2 a.m.

When Washington County Sheriff's Department deputies arrived at the incident, they discovered Erik Lyager on the ground with two people administering CPR. Lyager apparently was struck by a vehicle traveling north on Northwest 185th Avenue.

He was taken by Lifeflight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Health Center where he was pronounced dead.

Investigating the incident, the Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team closed that portion of 185th Avenue for several hours. Preliminary results show Lyager crashed his bike prior to being struck by the car, according to the sheriff's department.

Skid marks on the roadway and in the gravel on the side of the road, indicate he was traveling north when he lost control of his bicycle, crashed and came to rest in the middle of the roadway.

Deputies don't know yet what made Lyager lose control and it's uncertain how long he had been laying in the roadway prior to being struck by the vehicle, a 2001 Pontiac Sunbird.

He was not wearing a helmet.

There was no indication the driver had consumed any intoxicants, was driving recklessly, or any other evidence that would indicate the driver was at fault, according to the sheriff's office.

There were reports that two bicyclists initially stopped and rendered aid to Lyager after the incident but those witnesses were gone when deputies arrived.

Investigators would like to speak to those witnesses or anyone else who may have seen the accident.

Anyone with information about the accident is encouraged to call the Washington County Sheriff's Office, 503-846-2700.
