My hope for students includes and extends beyond academics

I am an educator, which clearly influences my lens and predisposition. More importantly, I am a father. I have two children, ages 7 and 10, and I love them dearly. Like all parents, I have high hopes and dreams for them. Although I was a teacher and a principal before I was a parent, it is my children who have had the most significant influence on what I believe every student deserves.

The political and emotional discussion surrounding the Common Core Standards has been interesting. My advice is that we should all put Common Core Standards into a holistic perspective, and recognize the beneficial opportunities they present. Rigorous academic standards are important, and in the Beaverton School District mastering content (KNOW) is a critical component of our student goal. I want and expect my own children to meet competitive standards, graduate from high school and experience success in their postsecondary education. Yet, my hopes for my children include and extend far beyond academic content.by: TIMES PHOTO: JONATHAN HOUSE - Jeff Rose is the superintendent of the Beaverton School District.

I want my children to be able to THINK critically and creatively. Life and the world of work are filled with complex problems, and they need the skills and adaptability to tackle them.

I want my kids to be able to ACT in a self-directed and collaborative manner. Discipline, work ethic and the ability to interact with others are talents needed for success regardless of career or life choices.

I want my kids to be able to GO where their hearts and minds take them, to navigate locally and globally.

These are also the goals we have for all students in the Beaverton School District (Think, Know, Act, Go). Today’s students should be ready for a world beyond city, state and even national borders. They should be flexible, prepared for the inevitable changes they will experience. In fact, I want them to embrace change and even drive change if they believe it is the right thing to do.

I think what I want for my kids is probably very similar to what we all hope for our children. We must be dedicated to ensuring all students grow into fulfilled, engaged and empowered learners and contributors to family, our community and our world.

I am in full support of implementing the Common Core Standards. As we implement them, it will be our job as educators, families and a community to keep a balanced mindset and focus. These standards will require some change, and yet they are a part of the comprehensive educational system our children deserve.
