First Friday hosts donation drive for homeless youth

Beaverton event benefits HomePlate Youth Services

This week's Beaverton First Friday encourages local businesses and patrons to donate items to HomePlate Youth Services.

HomePlate Youth Services is a Washington County nonprofit that supports the positive development of young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability.

“HomePlate is such an important partner in helping our most vulnerable youth,” said Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle. “They tirelessly provide outreach, weekly dinners and social support for the 1,900 homeless youth in Washington County.”

People are asked to donate some of the most needed items, including bottled water, TriMet adult tickets, sleeping bags, backpacks, healthy snacks and baby wipes.

During First Friday, more than 40 local businesses in the heart of downtown Beaverton extend their hours until 8 p.m. or later to offer special discounts and promotions.

Beaverton Bakery, 12375 S.W. Broadway St., is the host business for the night. Come spin the prize wheel to win bakery treats and enjoy the music of New Orleans’s saxophone player Reggie Huston.

Information on special promotions offered by participating businesses will also be available.

Riverside Northwest Band and Swingset will put on special performances for people throughout the night on Broadway Street by Beaverton Kia, and Swingset, an acapella quartet, will walk around to participating businesses to serenade patrons.

First Friday is a function of the Beaverton Downtown Association, which strives to promote the preservation, history, culture, architecture and public use of Beaverton’s traditional downtown area.
