Saturday during the Oregon Association of Synchronized Swimming’s Classic Invitational. Synchro teams from Oregon and Washington competed in the regional event, featuring swimmers that ranged in age from 9 to 17.

Tualatin Hills Synchro Club hosted the all-day event, and I was able to cover parts of the event underwater.

Competitively, synchronized swimming sits at the confluence of art, pageantry and athletics. For many of us, just being able to swim, dive and wade in a deep pool for long periods of time is hard enough, but to do this while performing a routine, smiling and not looking like you’re about to gasp for breath, takes a lot of practice and hard work.

Underwater photography gives a great perspective of how hard these athletes work to achieve their above-the-water acts. They dive down, get into position and perform, moving above and below the water line, depending on the act. It’s a masterful performance of precision and timing that creates their routine for the judges.

Out of the water, the synchro culture is one of teamwork and camaraderie. The girls scream encouragement for each other and competing teams as the routines are performed. by: TIMES PHOTO: JONATHAN HOUSE - Tualatin Hills Synchro coach Taylor Miron touches up the makeup of swimmer Kathleen Sundin during the OASS Age Group Championships on Saturday.by: TIMES PHOTO: JONATHAN HOUSE - Members of the Multnomah Athletic Club Team perform in the 11-12 Intermediate category during the OASS Championships Saturday in Beaverton.by: TIMES PHOTO: JONATHAN HOUSE - Members of the Tualatin Hills Team perform in the 11-12 Intermediate category during the OASS Championships Saturday in Beaverton.by: TIMES PHOTO: JONATHAN HOUSE - Members of the Multnomah Athletic Club Team perform a lift in the 13-15 intermediate category during the competition.by: TIMES PHOTO: JONATHAN HOUSE - Ainsley Knutsen and LeeLee Smith perform with crisp maneuvers in the 11-12 OASS Age Group division.
