News in brief

CLASS OF ‘04 WINS BEAVERTON ALUMNI TILT: For the second time in three years, the Class of 2004 has walked away with the championship of the annual Beaverton Alumni Tournament. The fourth annual men’s basketball tournament featured 90 alumni players, 24 games and two days of action at Beaverton High School on July 21-22. The winner’s bracket included all four top seeds — the teams from the classes of ‘06, ‘04, ‘05, and ‘08 — but it was ‘04 that set the pace again, going undefeated to win the event and tie the Class of ‘05 for the best record all-time at 12-3. The Class of 2004 knocked out ‘05 in the semifinals, then came back in the finale to beat the top-seeded defending champion, Class of ‘06. In the title game, Greg Laybourn helped shut down Paul Noonan and later shared honors as tournament MVP with teammate Brad Krichevsky. Also named all-tournament were Noonan and Mitch Rice from the runners-up, Andrew Vancil from the third-place ‘05 team, and Ryan Meehan from the fourth-place ‘08 team. Other alums receiving honorable mention included: Mike Hood ‘98, Heath Bailey ‘99, Eric Scriven ‘02, Eddie Stamm ‘04, Joe Ahn ‘05, Nick Burnett ‘05, Deangelo Davis ‘10, and Class of ‘87 alumni Henry Springer and Kevin Grant.
