Beavers batter Axemen to reach 6A state

Beaverton does whatever it wants in its 49-14 win on Friday

BEAVERTON — This one felt good.

The Beaverton football team took some lumps during the 2012 Metro League season, but got a chance to turn the tables Friday night, hammering South Eugene 49-14 in its Class 6A Play-In game at Beaverton High School.

by: MILES VANCE - TD RUN - Beaverton senior quarterback Kyle Eckrosh takes off on a 16-yard touchdown run against South Eugene on Friday night.

The win, which snapped a two-game losing streak, lifted Beaverton's 2012 overall record to 6-4 and gave the Beavers a berth in the first round of the 32-team Class 6A state playoffs. The Beavers, 19th-ranked in the state, will play on the road in their next game, likely on Friday night.

“Our line played really well,” said Beaverton senior quarterback Kyle Eckrosh, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more against the Axemen. “We played as a team, and we know we're a good team.”

“It was a good night for us,” added senior receiver Davasyia Hagger, who scored his team's first touchdown on Friday night. “And I think, for us, the next game should be competitive too.”

Beaverton rolled in to score just seven plays into Friday's game against the Axeman (0-10 overall), getting 35 yards from senior Evan Colorito on two plays, then scoring when Eckrosh hit Hagger in the left corner of the end zone for a TD just 1 minute, 37 seconds into the game.

But the Axemen came up with stops on Beaverton's next three series, that streak only ended when Jaden Brands picked off a Liam Duncan pass and got his offense back in business on the next-to-last play of the first quarter. Starting from the South Eugene 41, Eckrosh hit Colorito for 16 yards, Colorito picked up seven more on the ground, and Eckrosh then took a quarterback keeper around the right end for 17 yards and the score.

The Axemen very nearly cut the gap to one score on their next series, but Malik Fontleroy-Smith picked off a Duncan pass in the end zone for a stop. E series later, Beaverton forced a fumble and Dylan Erice recovered at the South 16-yard line.

From there, Eckrosh took a keeper around left end on the next play, broke a tackle, cut back against the grain and raced 16 yards to score to make it 21-0.

The Axemen fumbled the ball away to Anthony Bottaro five plays later, and on the very next play from scrimmage, Eckrosh connected over the middle with Fontleroy-Smith and he got behind the South defense for a 57-yard score and a 28-0 lead.

South Eugene came back with its best drive of the game, driving 55 yards on six plays in just under a minute for its first score, capping that drive with a five-yard Duncan scramble for a score.

The Beavers barely noticed, however, and just kept scoring in the second half. Beaverton marched 53 yards to score on its first drive of the second half, getting 40 yards on five carries by Fontleroy-Smith, including a 19-yard draw for a TD with 8:06 to go in the third.

Then, following a fourth-down stop by Colorito and John O'Reilly, Stephen Marcille took a fly sweep around the right end for 58 yards, another TD and a 42-7 lead. The Beavers scored again in their next series too, this time on a five-yard Colorito run, to extend their lead to 49-7 less than a minute into the fourth quarter.

South Eugene scored its final TD on a 10-yard Lincoln James run with 1:42 left in the game.
