Apollo girls battle to the end at state

Sunset closes out its successful 2012 run in the state playoffs

CORVALLIS — It didn't work out in the end, but at the very least, the Sunset girls water polo team can say it went down swinging at state.

The Apollos, the West Metro League runners up, battled Tigard throughout their Saturday contest in the Oregon High School Water Polo Playoffs, but the Tigers came through in the end to win 10-5 at Osborn Aquatic Center.

by: MILES VANCE - GOT IT - Sunset goalie Abby Griffiths reaches to make a save during her team's state playoff game against Tigard on Saturday at Osborn Aquatic Center.

The Tigers, the third-place finishers in the Pacific Conference, went on to drop a 5-4 decision to Barlow in the first round of the State Championship Tournament on Saturday, and will next play in the consolation semifinals of the state tournament against South Eugene at 7:30 a.m. Friday at Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center.

In Saturday's contest in Corvallis, the Apollos and Tigers traded scores early in the game, with Tigard getting a score from Laurel Nave-Powers and Sunset answering with a shot by Cassandra Dieterich.

But Tigard outscored Sunset 3-0 the rest of the way in the first half, two of those scores from Liz Irving and one by Avery Branen, and pulled ahead 4-1 at the half.

Sunset tried to rally in the third with goals from Brooke Weir and Kaye Shapiro, cutting Tigard's lead to two scores twice, the final time at 5-3 on Shapiro's shot with 21 seconds left in the period.

Tigard held sway from there, though, posting a 5-2 edge the rest of the game to pull away. Emily Pfieffer and Taylor Roth both scored twice in that span for the Tigers, while Sunset closed the game with scores from Amanda Crawford and Shapiro.

This year's Sunset team will graduate three seniors — Dieterich, Sydney Keller and Soraya Go.
