The Sunset girls are aiming for another long state playoff run

TUALATIN — For the Sunset girls soccer team, revenge is a dish best served in the second round of the state playoffs.

The Apollos, revisiting the 2011 state championship match in Tuesday’s second round of the Class 6A playoff, held the upper hand against the Timberwolves this time, winning 2-1 in overtime at Tualatin High School. The victory reversed last year’s 1-0 Tualatin win in the state title contest.

by: MILES VANCE - BIG SCORE - Alex Bibo of Sunset lets out a yell after making a steal and scoring against Sprague in their Saturday playoff contest.

No. 16 Sunset, the third-place finisher from the Metro League, improved to 8-4-4 overall with the win and advanced to Saturday’s state quarterfinals, where they’ll host No. 8 Clackamas, the Three Rivers League runner-up, at 1 p.m. Pacific Conference champ Tualatin, the top-ranked team in the state, ended its year at 12-2-2.

After a scoreless first half on Tuesday, Sunset’s Elly Williamson scored the game’s first goal 10 minutes into the second half from on a pass from Emmy Owens. Owens played the ball over the top, the Tualatin defense failed to clear it, and when the Wolves’ keeper came out to challenge, Williamson beat her to the ball and poked it in.

Tualatin tied the game with 13 minutes left in the regulation when Corinne Togai hit a shot from 25 yards out that Sunset keeper Taylor Luty tipped up to the crossbar, only to see it bounce back into play, hit her on the back of the head and roll into the goal.

In the first half of overtime, Sunset’s Alex Bibo got the game-winner on rebound from Owens’ hard shot. The Tualatin keeper blocked Owens’ shot, but it went straight to Bibo who hammered it home for the winner.

Both teams missed PK’s in the first half, with Tualatin’s Rachel Wagner missing wide left 13 minutes into the game, while 10 minutes later, Bibo also missed a PK left after Tualatin was called for a hand ball in the penalty box.

Sunset 2, Sprague 0

CEDAR MILL — Sunset kicked off its playoff festivities on Saturday with a 2-0 home win over 17th-ranked Sprague, the Central Valley Conference runner-up.

The Apollos hit the ground running against the Olympians, getting their first goal just 3:11 into the game when Caitlyn Connor took a pass from teammate Elly Williamson and volleyed it into the top corner of the goal to make it 1-0.

“I just hit into the top corner,” O’Connor said. “It really picked our team up.”

Sunset’s defense kept Sprague at bay most of the game, and the Apollos added the insurance goal with 17:25 left in the second half. There, Bibo picked off a slow pass from the Olympians’ back line, broke past the last Sprague defender for a one-on-one chance against the Oly keeper and beat her to the right post for the final 2-0 margin.

“Their defender couldn’t get there in time and I just ran through it,” Bibo said. “This gives us momentum going in the playoffs.”
