NEWS IN BRIEF

APOLLOS STAR: The Saint Michael’s College men’s basketball team in Vermont is on a roll this year, and two former Sunset High stars are providing the power.

Michael Holton Jr. and Dom Ditlefson both play prominent roles for the Saints, with Holton recently winning a place on the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll. During the week leading up to Nov. 25, Holton surpassed the 900-point plateau for his career, and will soon become the 14th Purple Knight junior to reach 1,000.

Thus far, Holton is averaging 11 points, four rebounds and four assists. Ditlefson leads his team in scoring at just under 12 points per game, as well as three rebounds and two assists.

WESTSIDE TIMERS WIN: The Westside Timbers B95 Copa (U-17) boys soccer team won the Surf College Cup Super Group Championship over the Thanksgiving weekend in San Diego, Calif.

The lowest-seeded team in the tournament, the Westside Timbers Copa went undefeated in five matches over three days to take the crown. The team, which never played together until it beat the No. 1-ranked Sacramento United 95 Reds 2-1 in its first match, features five local players — Jesuit’s Chase Boone, Christo Michaelson and Chris Chertude, Westview’s Hunter Pinson and Sunset’s Joe DeCesaro.

The team went on to beat 2011 tournament champs Real So Cal White, tied another top-10 team (Diablo FC), knocked off Futeca Camp Elite Premier of Guatemala 3-1 in the tournament semifinals, then won the Surf College Cup Championship with a 1-0 victory over the Scottsdale Soccer B96 Blackhawks, the No. 1 team from Arizona.

In the finale, Reggie Lopez drew a foul in the penalty box with five seconds remaining in regulation, then sealed the victory with a successful penalty kick with no time remaining on the clock.

WHAT’S AHEAD

Those two games are: No. 7 Tigard (11-1) meets No. 3 Lake Oswego (12-0) at noon; and top-ranked Jesuit (10-2) faces No. 5 Sheldon (12-0) at 4 p.m., also at Jeld-Wen Field.

MONTGOMERY TO LOUISVILLE: Alexis Montgomery, a senior guatrd on the Beaverton High girls basketball team, signed a national letter of intent to continue her college career at Louisville University.
