Skyhawks second and Jesuit third at 6A state meet

Southridge records its best-ever finish at the 6A state meet

by: MILES VANCE - REPEAT WINNER - Southridge senior Max Yakubovich speeds to victory in the 100-yard butterfly race during the Class 6A state meet at Mt. Hood Community College on Saturday.

GRESHAM — While Sunset’s boys team was the biggest story at the 2013 Metro League state swim meet, Southridge, Jesuit and Westview earned their fair share of headlines too.

And no, the above phrase “Metro League state swim meet” was not a mistake.

Sure, the real name of the event was the Class 6A state swim meet — it was held Friday and Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College — but it might as well have been the other after Sunset’s boys finished first (for more on the Apollos’ efforts at state, please see the story on Page A14), Southridge took second, Jesuit placed third and Westview eighth.

“Metro is definitely one of the strongest districts in the state,” said Southridge senior Kyle Dalrymple, who took fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke and also swam on the Skyhawks’ runner-up team in the 200 medley relay. “It’s incredible to have all that really close to home. We knew we just had to finish really strong and that’s what we did.”

Southridge’s boys posted six top-six finishes in the meet, with senior Max Yakubovich paving the way to the Skyhawks’ runner-up finish. Southridge finished the meet with 120 points, while Sunset took first at 260, Jesuit was third with 105 points and Westview eighth at 63.

First, Yakubovich and Dalrymple teamed with Aaron Loprete and Matt Braun to take second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:36.53.

Next, Yakubovich stepped to the fore in his two individual events, grabbing second in the 20 freestyle at 21.40, then winning his second straight state crown in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 49.80.

“It’s great. I’m thrilled with the result,” Yakubovich said. “I wasn’t really thinking so much about the time as much as touching the wall first. I got sick right after district so I was really worried about that, but I think I recovered pretty well pretty quickly. Those were great times.”

There was more success ahead for Southridge too, with Braun racing to sixth place in the 100 freestyle at 49.09, Braun, Loprete, Blake Hokkanen and Yakubovich taking third in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:27.89, and Dalrymple grabbing fourth in the 100 breaststroke at 59.13.

“We’re really happy with how it ended,” Dalrymple said. “We knew in the back of our heads that it was possible. We didn’t really talk about it much, but it all came together really nicely today and I think we’re all really proud of what we accomplished.”

“We all improved greatly during this time,” Braun said. “It was a really great meet for all of us.”

Jesuit’s boys notched seven top-six finishes in the meet — one more than Southridge — their best finish a runner-up swim by Sovijja Pou, Jackson Wahl, Sean Calkins and Ben Buchalski in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:16.28.

That effort, coupled with two top-five finishes by Pou, helped lift Jesuit to its best finish at state since it finished third again back in 2009.

“It was definitely a nice finish,” Pou said. “We’re definitely happy. We improved so much from last year.”

“It was really nice finishing up the meet like that,” Buchalski added. “It was just great.”

Other Jesuit highlights from Saturday included: the fifth-place finish by the 200 medley relay of Wahl, Buchalski, Pou and Marcus Imponenti at 1:40.15; Pou’s fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle at 4:52.16, and his fifth in the 200 free at 1:47.12; Buchalski’s fifth-place finish in the 500 free at 4:55.92; Wahl’s fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle at 53.37; Sean Calkins’ sixth in the 100 free at 54.43; and the runner-up effort in the 400 free relay.

For Westview, sophomore Alex LaRosa reached the finals in both his individual events, taking fifth in the 200 individual medley at 1:57.86, then coming back to place sixth in the 100 butterfly at 52.07. Westview also got a runner-up finish from Jacob Weitzel in the 500 freestyle with a finishing time of 4:43.73.
