Food drive

High school is expanding its area of solicitation

Canby High School students will hit the streets Wednesday, Oct. 30, for the second incarnation of the annual trick-or-treat for cans food drive.

Ten high school groups or clubs, along with the Baker Prairie Middle School Builders Club, will divide up Canby and knock on doors looking for food donations between 5:30-8 p.m.

The project was originally started by Canby FFA and expanded by the O Ambassadors. Last year was the first food drive when most of the town was canvassed and most of the student groups participated.

Each of the groups has a specific neighborhood outlined on a large map of the city and specific instructions not to stray into a different group's turf — so as to avoid soliciting the same houses twice. Nearly the entire city is assigned to a group this year.

Each group will canvass the neighborhood for about an hour.

“It's a good experience for the high school kids, who are really too old to go trick-or-treating for candy on Halloween,” said Canby High teacher Chris Bangs, who is helping organize the food drive. “This way they can satisfy that childhood yearning and also contribute to the community. And it is a tremendous contribution.”

Bangs said that an entire classroom was filled with food donations from last year’s event.

“It took us several days to drag it all over to the Kiwanis food collection at the old Rite Aid site,” Bangs said.

Many, but not all the students will be dressed up in Halloween costumes.
