Retail businesses in downtown Canby will see an increase in the beginning of May

Two retail stores are moving from Oregon City to downtown Canby the first of May. And that has city officials excited about the future.

“It is exciting to see a variety of new retail businesses in Canby filling vacant storefronts and bringing more great shopping options to downtown,” said Renate Mengelberg, Canby’s economic development director. “It is an indicator that the economy continues to improve and that there is enough market demand for entrepreneurs to invest in Canby.”

And that business investment has two new businesses arriving and a third with its doors already open. Canby, it seems, is moving in the right direction in the downtown area.

The two new businesses are:

Retro Revival – a vintage store featuring furniture, clothing, art and home goods - will open at 308 N. Grant Street. The Big White Goose opens its doors at 248 NW First Ave.

Big White Goose specializes in Annie Sloan paints. It will hold workshops, as well as features for home décor and unique gifts.

These two businesses will have their grand openings on Saturday, May 3.

The third new business that Mengelberg pointed to – with doors already open – is La Belle U Wellness Spa at 486 NW Third Ave, which is a wellness spa that features treatments from yoga to acupuncture, and manicures to massages. The grand opening is scheduled for April 26.

The three businesses are a good fit for Canby’s downtown business community, said Jamie Stickel, Canby Main Street manager.

“These businesses complement the recent openings of Especially For You and The Crooked Cottage, both of which opened in downtown after the first of the year, in addition to the rest of the Main Street businesses,” Stickel said. “These businesses add to the variety of businesses that make downtown Canby so great. I think it just heightens the excitement that people are feeling about shopping local.”

Another positive development is the recent purchase of Canby Square (home to Safeway, Ace Hardware, and more) by Argonaut Investments.

The new owners plan significant investments to upgrade the property, according to Mengelberg and Stickel.

“They have already painted existing buildings in a fresh new color scheme,” said Stickel.

“They will also remove a long vacant former restaurant building, install new monument signage, pave the parking lot and potentially add new space. They are already in serious discussions with new tenants.”
