Shimadzu receives award

Canby business received special recognition recently for the work it does internationally.

Shimadzu USA Manufacturing Inc. was one of four businesses honored by the Oregon Consular Corps this year for its outstanding contributions in international trade.

Joe Shaddix, vice president of operations, received the Mayor’s Award for Foreign Direct Investment on May 19 at the Oregon International Business Awards and Consular Corps Gala.

“Shimadzu’s ability to expand our business had to do with the excellent cooperation and working relationships we enjoy with the city of Canby, Clackamas County and the business development departments of the state of Oregon,” said Shaddix.

In 2011, the company invested $5 million in a 54,000-square-foot expansion that doubled the size of the Canby facility.

According to Economic Developoment Director Renate Mengelberg, Shimadzu is an innovative company that embraces world class manufacturing principles, provides an excellent work environment for its 132 employees and is one of the most productive and profitable plants in the worldwide organization.

The company is considered an industry leader in the manufacturing of high quality analytical and clinical instruments. They are sold domestically and exported worldwide through affiliated distributors. The Canby plant produces high-performance liquid chromatographs, gas chromatographs-mass spectrometers and liquid chromatographs-mass spectrometers.

Additionally, Shimadzu conducts research and development to customize instrumentation for customers and applications worldwide.

About 70 percent of its products are exported to Canada, Europe, China, Australia and Singapore, as well as Central and South America. Shimadzu Canby has been the U.S. flagship North American facility since 1997 and one of the first occupants of the Canby Industrial Park.

Shimadzu has recently registered with the FDA and listed their products as Class I medical devices for domestic use as well as export. The company may also activate its foreign trade zone status in the near future which will streamline the export and import process and reduce customs duty compliance costs.

"Congratulations to Shimadzu for this well-deserved award," Mengelberg said. "You have done Canby proud."
