The project could be picking up steam again as volunteers stepped forward at recent meeting

The Canby off-leash dog park project picked up some support Thursday from some volunteers who will do some picking up of their own.

More than 30 supporters so far have volunteered to maintain the park the first year after it is built.

Recent city budget cuts that diminished the maintenance staff threatened to stall the project. City Council said it couldn’t start construction on a dog park until it had a way to maintain it.

But supporters of the off-leash dog park project met Thursday in the community room of the Canby Police station to discuss its status and how to solve the maintenance quandary.

Sixteen people signed up early and fifteen more signed up at the meeting, said Matilda Deas, senior city planner, who led the meeting. “And we haven’t even contacted the 587 people who signed petitions supporting the dog park,” she said

The city plans to establish the dog park on 6 acres of city-owned land at 1170 NE Territorial Road. The fenced dog park including active and shy dog areas, will take up about three acres.

The maintenance chores will include picking up about three times a week, emptying trash cans and replenishing trash bags and dispenser pickup bags.

Volunteers will do the mowing as well, Deas said. That might be just once a month. Only the center of the park is grass; the rest will be covered with bark pieces.

Supporters hope their volunteer commitment will enable the city to move forward on the project. Once everything is in order, construction would take about a month, Deas said.

Deas hopes to coordinate the volunteer activity with an online calendar scheduling the maintenance chores.

Many at the meeting felt it was important to first establish basic park amenities, Deas said. Volunteers, high school students or scouts come in later to put in benches, shelter and other things less time sensitive.
