North Marion High hits the stage
The 1920s-era The Boy Friend will light up the stage at North Marion High School Nov. 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets, which are available at the door, are $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors.
The school is located at 20167 Grim Road N.E., Aurora.
The musical is about a group of English girls at a finishing school in France who only have one thing on their minds: finding a boyfriend.
Its very light-hearted, said director Carol Read. Ive always loved this show. We did this show when I was in high school. It hasnt been available until recently, so Ive been waiting for the right time.
The show has 25 cast members and five crew members, who have worked with three-sided set pieces called periaktoi, allowing for three quick scene changes.
One cast member will probably not be wishing others to break a leg, after she broke her knee during an early rehearsal warm-up. Now, sophomore Kayla Jackson will mostly be seen on stage as a hot dog vendor and as a bartender.
Ive learned that no matter what happens, you can still keep going, Jackson said.
But Read said its important to keep Jackson on stage, as shes a strong singer.
I have never had a group that sounds so rich when they are all singing, she said. Voices range from high sopranos to the lowest baritone Ive ever heard in a high schooler.
Senior Chase Porfily, who plays Tony, the son of a millionaire who is posing as a poor delivery boy, said the show has something for everyone.
Its a lot more open as far as allowing more character interpretation, he said. We have a great cast and lots of talent. There are a lot of new people, so you can get a different experience from previous North Marion shows.
Senior Paige Dean, who plays Polly, Tonys love interest, has been part of the North Marion Players her entire high school career. But this show has challenged her unlike any other, she said.
Its different than what Ive done before because its a lot more proper and not just cutesy like a lot of what weve done, she said. And Ive never played such a girly character. But its still a lot of fun.
Because of the different story arcs with multiple characters, any audience member can enjoy the show, Dean said, noting, There isnt a dull moment.
