by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - The Carus Elementary School PTA?will host a performance of the Portland Taiko Group Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m. at the Richard R. Brown Fine Arts Center.

Tickets are $5 and available through the Carus School office.

The performers blend their expertise in drumming, storytelling and teaching to share the art of taiko and the role of spirit, energy and respect in this cultural tradition. Through dynamic and powerful drumming, reviewing the political roots of American taiko, the sharing of real-life stories and examples, as well as participatory interactions, the program uses taiko to foster greater cultural awareness and respect for difference among elementary school students.

Teresa Enrico and Michelle Fujii are the artistic co-directors of Portland Taiko, an Asian American drum performance group.

Enrico began with Portland Taiko over 10 years ago and has been doing educational performances for more than six years. Her training in American taiko includes work with veteran leaders such as San Jose Taiko, Sacramento Taiko Dan, Kenny Endo, Shasta Taiko and the Japanese groups, Zampa Daiko, Hanayui, and Kodo.

Fujiias played with San Jose Taiko, UCLA Kyodo Taiko, Taiko Project and she helped co-found

On Ensemble based in Los Angeles. She has studied Japanese folk dance extensively with Warabi-za and Shohei Kikuchi in Japan and has a degree in ethnomusicology from UCLA.
