Local Girl Scout troop delivers surprise
The girls honor local resident on her 100th birthday
Canby Girl Scouts Troop 40009 had a special surprise for Doris Johnson. They showed up with flags and cookies July 12 at Hope Village Assisted Living where Johnson was celebrating her 100th birthday.
Their appearance was in recognition of the many years Johnson served as a scout leader in Eugene, guiding her troop and developing a day camp.
Following a flag ceremony, they presented Johnson with a huge birthday card and a Girl Scouts T-shirt.
Johnson and her husband also volunteered as leaders for the Boy Scouts providing opportunities for cookouts, camping trips and badge earning sessions.
She passed on her dedication of volunteering for children. Her daughter, Joanne Hanson, started a Brownies group and served five years as a leader. Her son, Larry Petersen, and his wife coached youth soccer for many years.
