“The National Leadership Conference is the culmination of the year for our members,” Canby High School teacher and FBLA advisor Tonya Boustead said.

Students Michael Lam, Alyssa Gascho, Karly Martinez, Ryan Bigej, Miranda Gibson, and Natasha Troxler received high enough placings in their respective categories at the District Skill Conference and Oregon State Business Leadership Conference to qualify for the national conference. Gascho and Martinez were unable to attend due to prior commitments.

“This experience has really opened my eyes to the different elements of business and I gained some great tools through the IFL Leadership Conference,” Bigej said.

The conference included participants from across the United States, Germany, Canada, and the Virgin Islands. The students sharpened core business skills, expanded networks, and participated in more than 60 business-related competitive events.

Bigej, Gibson and Troxler made it into the top 15 out of 76 teams in their event after their first presentation. They had to present and answer impromptu questions from a second set of judges to determine the top ten placements. Bigej, Gibson and Troxler received national recognition at the FBLA Awards of Excellence ceremony with a second place finish and a $450 cash award in Business Ethics.

“This experience was incredible,” parent, Leah Troxler, said. “The workshops and conference are excellent and the networking with other peers creates lifetime memories and friendships. I hope that more students will take advantage of this opportunity and get involved next year.”
