Chamber, county have money for tourism ideas

The Canby Area Chamber of Commerce and Clackamas County Department of Tourism are offering a grant of up to $20,000 to promote tourism in Canby and Clackamas County.

They are looking for projects that will increase overnight lodging stays; bring visitors into communities from more than 50 miles away to shop, dine, recreate, take in arts and cultural offerings, or visit heritage sites; or encourage visitors to “linger longer.”

The maximum amount that could be awarded to a single project is the entire $20,000.

Funding for these Community Partnership Program grants comes from the county’s 6 percent transient room tax. Projects that receive funding under this program are expected to be completed by June 30, 2015.

Projects are selected by a local review committee based on likelihood of attracting visitors (20 percent), ability to generate overnight stays (20 percent), partnerships (15 percent), use of additional or leveraged funds (15 percent), self-sustaining growth and capacity building potential (15 percent) and measurable ROI (15 percent).

Public, private or nonprofit organizations whose project demonstrates an ability to benefit the greater public interest of tourism development and promotion are eligible to apply. Examples of past projects include geocache challenges, maps, brochures, responsive websites, marketing and promotion, interpretive panels, driving and walking tours, agritourism, heritage loops, organized rides and runs, and support for festivals and events.

Ineligible projects are those that primarily benefit a single lodging partner, business or individual; make capital improvements benefiting a private for-profit enterprise or a private property owner or that compensate applicants and awardees for executing their own proposed scope of work.
