Gymnastics: Canby girl wins statewide competition
Kara Harper, a fourth-grader at Lee Elementary School, takes first place at the Fall Compulsory State Championships in Grants Pass.
Local fourth-grader Kara Harper jumped and vaulted her way to a division title at a recent statewide gymnastics competition in Grants Pass.
Harpers victory came Dec. 7-8 during the Fall Compulsory State Gymnastics Championships, where she earned an all-around score of 36.100 to edge runner-up Tessa MacFarlan (35.675).
Harper placed first in the vault with a score of 8.625 and also won the floor exercise with a 9.600. She took third on the beam (9.125) and fourth on the bars (8.750).
Harper, who attends Lee Elementary School in Canby, began competing in gymnastics three years ago and has developed her skills at Metro Gymnastics Center in Tigard. Her main coach is Marci McIntyre.
And although Harper practices for gymnastics about 11.5 hours each week, she still finds time for jazz, ballet and aerial dancing at Allegro Dance Studio in Canby.
