Junior makes first team in boys 50 free, earns two second-team nods

He also received honorable mention in the 100 butterfly.Ryan Cully and several other members of the Canby swimming team earned all-conference recognition this season.

Cully made the first team after taking second place in the boys 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.98 seconds at the Three Rivers League championships.

The junior also garnered second-team all-district honors in the 100 free race and the 200 free relay, where he joined Christian Meza, Michael Haring and Cole DeRisio for a runner-up finish at the conference finials.

The quartet clocked a time of 1 minute 35.66 seconds, finishing behind Lake Oswego (1:34.50).

Four swimmers received honorable mention: DeRisio in the boys 100 butterfly, Alex Olson (500 free), Michael Haring (100 backstroke) and Kendra Olsen (girls 100 fly).

Cully and Olsen were named the team’s most outstanding swimmers, coach Eric Laitinen said.

The Cougars finished in sixth place overall on the boys side with 138 points at the district meet and seventh on the girls side with 62. Lake Oswego’s boys and Lakeridge’s girls captured district titles with 234 points and 268 points, respectively.

Canby was not represented at the OSAA state championships for the first time since 1993.
