Bicycle-car crash results in serious injuries

Photo Credit: PHOTO CONTRIBUTED BY OREGON STATE POLICE - The accident occurred on Highway 126 east of Powell Butte on Tuesday morning.A 53-year-old man from Ontario, Canada, was struck from behind while riding his bicycle on Highway 126 east of Powell Butte on Tuesday afternoon.

Oregon State Police said that at approximately 4:44 p.m., Frederick Bouwman was riding his KOGA Miyata bicycle westbound along the paved shoulder of Highway 126 near milepost 9 when he was struck from behind by a westbound 2003 GMC Sierra pickup driven by Norman Chadwick, 44, from Powell Butte.

According to the police, Bouwman was hit by the truck’s right front quarter panel and side mirror and ejected from his bicycle. Bouwman suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries as a result of the accident. He was transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend via air ambulance. OSP said that he was wearing a helmet. Chadwick was not injured in the accident and is cooperating with the investigation. An enforcement decision is pending upon completion of the investigation. OSP was assisted at the scene by Crook County Sheriff's Office, local fire department and Oregon Department of Transportation personnel.
