Going to watch a little football and a lot of commercials

Deadline to be place your business in the 2014 Chamber Directory is this Friday

The NFL Super Bowl XLVIII will be played “sometime” this weekend; maybe just not on Sunday. If the weather does not cooperate they may have the game on either Saturday or even Monday. I personally would like to see the Super Bowl played on Saturday every year. It would give everyone the chance to recover from what has become known as the Super Bowl Monday hangover and would save employers between $820 and $850 million due to employees calling in sick, discussing the game, and even discussing the commercials, if they do happen to go to work.

This year’s showdown between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks will be a good game, but does not come without controversy and lots of hype, both on the field and off, some true and some not.

There have been a lot of jokes about the fact that both teams going to the Super Bowl have legalized marijuana for recreational use, Colorado and Washington. It has been called The Bud Bowl, Weed Bowl, Hash Bowl, and just last week an old rumor that first surfaced in the '60s resurfaced. Rumor had it that Phillip Morris had announced that they would be marketing the “Marlboro M” for sale in both states. According to Snoopes.com, this is false and was actually a spoof and intended as a joke.

While I will enjoy watching Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks play for the championship, I am not rooting for one over the other and admit that I will be watching mostly for the commercials. One that I do not anticipate seeing is the Marlboro Man riding along on the prairie with a Marlboro M between his lips, a Bud Light in one hand, and a bag of Doritos in the other.

The Prineville – Crook County Chamber of Commerce sent out a notice last week about a company called Sports Media, based out of Idaho. They sell advertising and sponsorships for calendars.

The Chamber indicated that Sports Media is calling local businesses and misrepresenting themselves, and are in no way connected to the Crook County Athletic Program.

Your money will not go toward the Crook County Athletic Program if you participate with this advertising company.
