“Anytime you can send your JV team to a varsity caliber tournament and get some wins, that’s good for the individuals and that’s good for the team,” said Crook Head Coach Jake Huffman. “Iron sharpens iron.”

The Crook County JV team defeated last year’s class 5A runner-up Dallas 43-26, knocked off Sweet Home, who finished third in class 3A a year ago, by a score of 47-30, whipped Tigard 58-15, and rolled past a renegade team made up of wrestlers from several of the other schools 63-9. Hillsboro, who finished fourth in Class 6A last year, blitzed the Cowboys 55-18, while Tillamook snuck past Crook County 42-33, and Lebanon edged the Cowboys 37-33.

“They were our second team guys, but we beat some good teams,” said Crook County assistant coach Jake Gonzales. “Hillsboro kind of beat us up a little bit, but we beat Dallas pretty good and Tillamook and Lebanon were pretty close,”

Hillsboro won the tournament with a 7-0 record.

Gonzales added that Crook County was forced to forfeit the heavyweight match during each dual.

“It’s kind of hard to win a close dual when you have to forfeit points,” he said.

Cole Ovens finished the tournament with a 7-0 record including seven pins. The 145-pounder was the lone Cowboy to go undefeated during the tournament.

Gonzales also praised the efforts of Curtis Crouch who wrestled at 220 pounds for most of the tournament, but wrestled heavyweight in at least one match.

Gonzales was also pleased with how well the rest of the team competed.

“The effort is there. They are young and they have some things they need to work on, but it’s going to happen,” he said.

The Crook County JV team will travel to Nampa, Idaho to compete alongside the varsity team at the Rollie Lane Invitational, which is scheduled for Jan. 3-4.
