CCHS dominates home duals

Cowboys tune up for Oregon Classic with convincing wins over Ontario and Thurston

Thursday night was about getting ready for the Oregon Wrestling Classic, but it was also about sending a statement to other wrestling programs in the state.by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Trayton Libolt defeats Francisco Barrerra of Ontario during Thursday night's Crook County Duals. The Cowboys went on to win the dual 79-0 and also defeated Thurston 62-12 on the night.

The Crook County Cowboys tuned up for the weekend tournament by crushing both Ontario and Thurston at the Crook County Duals.

“I think having a couple of matches before the Classic helps because it sharpens us up a little bit,” said Gunnar Robirts, who won a pair of 185-pound matches on the night. “I think we wrestled good. You always have to keep improving, but I think we wrestled good today and are ready for the Classic.”

The Cowboys didn’t just look ready for the Classic, they looked nearly invincible. The team opened the evening with a 79-0 thrashing of Ontario, who chose to forfeit a number of matches despite having a full roster of wrestlers in attendance.

In the nightcap, the Cowboys were nearly as dominant as they rolled over the Thurston Colts 62-12.

“I don’t think the kids were super happy when we told them they had to make weight Thursday night,” Crook County Head Coach Jake Huffman said. “I think some of them had planned to use tonight to get down to weight but we thought that it would be good for them to get down and wrestled some matches at this weight. We just wanted to get some competition before we headed to the Classic.”

In perhaps the biggest individual match of the evening, Trayton Libolt held on to defeat Francisco Barrera 5-3 in their 113-pound battle. Barrera had won the previous meeting between the two wrestlers, but Libolt forced the action the entire match and was able to come away with a big win for the Cowboys.

However, Libolt was not the only Cowboy wrestler to have an impressive evening. Of the 22 matches that were contested on the evening, the Cowboys won 15 matches by pin.

Ryder Shinkle, Colbran Meeker, Tyler Berger, and Robirts each had two pins on the evening, while Johnny Avina, Grayson Munn, Hayden Bates, and Jason Williams each pinned the only opponent they faced on the evening.

“I think this makes it easier to get ready for the Classic,” Shinkle said. “There are some tough teams, but at the 4A level I don’t think anyone can beat us. It’s a matter of beating the best individuals. Even the tough kids we are going to whip up on and make a statement.”
