Cowboys fall 7-1 to Outlaws

Pedro de Souza wins lone match for Crook County

Despite a strong performance from Pedro de Souza and Jack Stubblefield, the Crook County Cowboys fell 7-1 to the Sisters Outlaws in Wednesday afternoon tennis action.

The Cowboys lone win came from de Souza, who knocked off Brennan Miller 6-0, 6-1 in their No. 3 singles LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Leonhard Pusl hits a forehand shot during the No. 1 singles match against Sisters. Pusl and teammate Brick Woodward dropped the match 6-1, 6-0 as the Outlaws defeated the Cowboys 7-1 in the dual match.

“de Souza dominated his opponent with strong serving and powerful groundstrokes,” said Crook County Coach Dan Brown.

Although he eventually lost, the highlight of the match for Crook County was the performance of Stubblefield. The sophomore went toe-to-toe with Sisters senior Paul Fullhart (a two-time state qualifier) before finally falling 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 in a third set tiebreaker.

“Stubblefield played a remarkable match,” Brown said. "He had good chances to win the match and should take this experience into the season as a big confidence builder.”

The Cowboys No. 2 singles player, Garrett Harper, also played a competitive match before falling 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 to Trevor Standen.

“Harper had early control of this match, but let a few errors creep into his game,” Brown said.

Sisters took control of the remainder of the match. Outlaw Connor Schaab defeated Hayden Boyd 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles match.

The Outlaws easily won both the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches. Devon Calvin and Evan Rickards rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brick Woodward and Leonhard Pusl at No. 1 doubles while Shawn Horton and Ethan Stengle took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Cayden Quinn and LeAndre Nicolai at No. 2 doubles.

“Doubles was a learning experience for both teams,” Brown said. “We will probably experiment with the doubles lineup in upcoming matches.”

Crook County was forced to forfeit both the No. 3 and 4 doubles matches.

The Cowboys do not play again until Tuesday, April 1 when they go on the road to take on the Stayton Eagles in a 4 p.m. match.
