Forfeits cost Cowgirls in loss to Cougars

Mountain View takes advantage of four forfeits to take 5-3 win

The Crook County Cowgirls dropped their opening match of Intermountain Hybrid season as they fell 5-3 to the Mountain View Cougars in a Tuesday afternoon match in Bend.

As has happened all season, the Cowgirls dominated play, winning three of four contested matches, only to lose the match when they were forced to forfeit the final four matches of the match.

“It was fine,” said Crook County Head Coach Lloyd Rodgers. “We won every match but one, we just don’t have a very big team.”

Elsa Harris continued her undefeated season, rolling over Mountain View’s Brandy Graham to take a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.

“The poor girl didn’t have a chance,” Rodgers said. “She’s (Harris) phenomenal. Her time spent at the big USTA tournaments is just paying dividends. She is dominating.”

Greta Harris was also impressive, earning a 6-2, 6-1 win over Chloe Johnson at No. 2 singles despite playing with an injured knee.

“Greta took care of business even with her bad knee,” Rodgers said. “It got worse as the match went on, but she was able to finish it and won.”

Crook County also controlled the No. 1 doubles match as Laura Fraser and Gwyneth Ptomey took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mountain View’s Missy Burke and Grace Cole.

“They had a few jitters just to start,” Rodgers said. “They got through them and then they went out and won so they are ready to get their game going better.”

Mountain View’s lone win, on the court, came at No. 3 singles where Charlotte Swaney knocked off Maggie Kasberger 6-4, 6-2.

The Cowgirls played Bend Senior High on Thursday. Following Thursday’s match the team is off until Tuesday, April 15 when they host Redmond in a 4 p.m. match.
