Cowboys fall to Cougars

Harper earns lone Crook County win in 7-1 loss to Mountain View

Despite playing some of their best tennis of the year, the Crook County Cowboys fell to the Mountain View Cougars 7-1 in their Intermountain Hybrid League opener.

“It was very encouraging to see that the majority of our players did much better in the second sets,” said Crook County Coach Aaron LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Brick Woodward plays a shot during the Cowboys' loss to the Mountain View Cougars on Tuesday. Woodward and doubles partner Leonhard Pusl lost to Brooks Larraneta and Seth Atkinson 6-1, 6-4.

The Cowboys were without No. 1 singles player Jack Stubblefield, which turned out to have a big impact on the outcome of the match.

“It was a little difficult not having Jack yesterday because of his sickness,” Raasch said. “All of our players had to play up in the competition, but I felt like most of the players really did step up and play to the level of the competition.”

Although the final results look lopsided, the Cowboys were competitive in every match played at the dual, which was held Tuesday afternoon in Prineville.

Pedro de Souza, who normally plays No. 2 singles, stepped into the No. 1 spot and nearly pulled off a major upset. After dropping the first set 6-4, de Souza came back to win set 2 4-6, forcing a tiebreaker. Mountain View’s Philip Atkinson finally won the marathon 12-10 to edge de Souza by the narrowest of margins.

With de Souza filling the No. 1 spot, Garrett Harper stepped into the No. 2 position and earned the Cowboys' lone win of the night, knocking off Derek Miller 6-3, 4-6, (10-1) in another three set match.

“I felt like Harper played very well,” Raasch said.

At No. 3 singles, Mountain View’s Jacob Lenschen won over Cayden Quinn 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, Brooks Larraneta and Seth Atkinson of Mountain View knocked off Brick Woodward and Leonhard Pusl 6-1, 6-4 while Grant Miller and Tye Leahy defeated Hayden Boyd and LeAndre Nicolai 6-0, 6-3.

With Crook County short of players, Mountain View won the remaining three matches by forfeit.

The Cowboys were at home again on Thursday when they hosted the Bend Lava Bears.

The Cowboys travel to Redmond twice next week as they take on the Redmond Panthers on Tuesday and the Ridgeview Ravens on Thursday.

Both matches are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
