Panthers blows game open with a 12-run sixth inning

The The Redmond Panthers rolled out to a big early lead Wednesday against the host Crook County Cowboys in summer baseball action.

Crook County tried to rally, but the Panthers exploded for 12 runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach for good. The Cowboys scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but it wasn’t enough as the game was called due to the 10-run rule with the Panthers leading 21-7.by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Rowdie Dalton slides safely into second base in the first inning of the Cowboys' game with the Redmond Panthers. Dalton scored later in the inning, but it wasn't enough as the Cowboys lost 21-7.

“You saw the slow start we had,” said assistant coach Cody Norris. “We put a rally together in the sixth, but it was a way too little too late type of deal.”

Redmond scored five runs in the first inning, with most of the damage coming due to walks. Crook County responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. However, the Panthers slowly pulled away and led 9-5 going into the decisive sixth inning.

“We couldn’t throw strikes,” Norris said. “But once again the kids showed heart and effort and that’s what give me the most hope looking forward.”

Beau Kline led the Cowboy offensive efforts going two-for-three from the plate with two runs scored. Joe McInturff was also two-for-three with a run scored and an RBI.

Josh Norris made a spectacular catch in centerfield, and Kyle Smith and Logan Freeman combined to pick a runner off of third base, but other than that there were few highlights for the Cowboys.

Crook County was back on the field again on Thursday when they hosted the Bend Lava Bears.

There is just one game remaining in the league summer season, a matchup in Redmond against the Ridgeview Ravens on Tuesday, July 15. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
