Races open to packed house on Ladies Night at Crooked River Roundup Race Meet

A larger than usual Wednesday night crowd witnessed the start of this year’s Crooked River Roundup Race Meet.

“The crowd was outstanding and the Robberson Ford Ladies Night program that we have had here for the past few years has been just remarkable,” said Crooked River Roundup president Dean Noyes late Wednesday night. “They have improved our handle year over year so we are really looking forward to the remainder of the race meet.”by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Chica Caliente, ridden by Jake Samuels in blue on the rail, wins the third race at this year's Crooked River Roundup Race Meet. Poppy Love ridden by Jose Guerrero faded to third, while My Maggie Mae ridden by Matthew Werner-Hagerty, in green, made a late charge to take second.

Although the race cards were not all full, Wednesday’s races went smoothly the entire evening. After a hot day, the breeze started to blow in the late afternoon and by post time of the first race the temperatures were comfortable.

“The weather was really in our favor tonight,” Noyes said. “It was the perfect temperature and that’s the way it’s expected to be all week. I think we’ve hit the quinella here.”

This year’s races have several jockeys who are new to Prineville and the new riders made an impact immediately.

Riding Sis Tar, Matthew Werner-Hagerty sprinted to victory in the opening race of the night. Sis Tar won the 250-yard quarter horse race with a time of 13.983 seconds. Kassie Guglielmino, another jockey new to Prineville, rode Hittin the Mark into second with a time of 14.106 seconds.

Werner-Hagerty went on to win the final race of the night, a 5 1/2-furlong thoroughbred race. In one of the closest races of the night, Werner-Hagerty rode Alltheway Heather to a come-from-behind win over Twobit’n Billie. Alltheway Heather won in a photo finish in a time of 1:10.8.

When the dust settled on the evening, Guglielmino had an even better night than Werner-Hagerty. Guglielmino, who is one of two women jockeys at this year’s race meet, won the third, fourth and fifth races of the evening to finish with more wins than any other jockey on the night.

Guglielmino’s first win was aboard All Star Stan, who closed late to win with a time of 1:11.26 in the 5 1/2-furlong race. In the next race, Guglielmino led wire to wire aboard Hyho Travio 610-yard race with a time of 33.413 seconds.

Then, in the longest race of the evening, Guglielmino rode Check Out the Cat to victory. Check Out the Cat pulled ahead late to win the seven-furlong race in 1:33.11.

Jake Samuels, a jockey more familiar to Prineville race fans, also won multiple races on the night. Samuels rode Chica Caliente to victory in the 5-furlong third race, winning commandingly with a time of 1:06.68.

Samuels’ second win came in the most important race of the evening, the Simonis Sprint. The race honors the memory of Gloria Simonis, a long-time volunteer at the races, who recently passed away.

“Now we get to honor Gloria,” Noyes said, ending his interview just before the start of the race.

Samuels rode Ziggy Zack, who closed late, to victory in the 5-furlong race with a time of 1:05.45.by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Horses come out of the gate during the first race of this year's race meet. Sis Tar, ridden by Matthew Werner-Hagerty, won the 250-yard quarter horse race with a time of 13.983. Racing continues at the Crook County Fairgrounds through Saturday night.

The final jockey to win a race Wednesday evening was Jose Guerrero, who rode Easily a Smash Hit to victory in the 250-yard second race with a time of 13.633 seconds.

The handle for Wednesday’s races was $41,835, one of the largest betting nights for a Wednesday in race meet history.

Racing continues at the Crook County Fairgrounds through Saturday night. Like Wednesday, Thursday had eight races on the card. Both Friday and Saturday are scheduled to have 10 races with the biggest race of the meet scheduled for Saturday. Most of the races at this year’s race meet have a guaranteed minimum purse of $2,300. However, Saturday’s Jack Rhoden Memorial Bonus Challenge has a staggering guaranteed purse of $15,000.

One new feature for this year’s race meet is a betting class for novice race fans. The free 30-minute sessions will be held at 6 p.m. nightly in the Oregon State University Extension Service building next to the fairgrounds.

Also popular this year are the new 7 feet by 7 feet square big screen televisions that allow race fans to see the race live from the beer garden and which show replays between races in front of the main grandstands.

Noyes is excited about the remainder of the race meet.

“The feedback we are getting is fantastic,” he said. “We changed up the music a little and added the big screen TVs and we are getting a lot of positive feedback.”

Gates open nightly at 6 p.m. with post time scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Cost of a ticket is $5 at the gate, or race fans can purchase discount tickets in advance at Wilco in Prineville.
