Rogue County wins Rhoden Memorial

Huge crowds watch four days of racing at the Crook County Fairgrounds

Rogue Country won in a photo finish to take the big race of the 2014 Crooked River Roundup Race Meet.

The quarter horse, ridden by Jake Samuels, edged Cm Got Overserved, ridden by Luis Gonzalez, to take the $17,000 Jack Rhoden Memorial Bonus Challenge.

Although that was the biggest race of the four-day event, it certainly wasn’t the only one that excited the crowd.

“People from our industry take pictures at the finish line because of the enthusiasm of our crowd,” said Roundup president Dean Noyes. “We have a lot of people watching the races, but we have other people taking photos of the crowd just because of the enthusiasm and excitement of the crowd. The sport of kings is alive and well in Prineville.”by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Horses come off the corner during the first race Saturday at the Crooked River Roundup Race Meet. Sing And Swing, ridden by Jose Guerrero in white, came from behind to win the race. Yuma Landing, ridden by Jake Samuels in red, came in second in the race.

The big win was nearly enough to propel Samuels to the top of the jockey standings. Samuels finished with nine victories during the race meet, while Matthew Werner-Hagerty won 11 races. Kassie Guglielmino was third among jockeys, winning eight races in her first appearance in Prineville.

Not only were the crowds large, they wagered large sums of money. The handle for the four-day event was $207,559, nearly identical to 2013's record-breaking year.

“It’s amazing, over the last several years our handle has grown,” Noyes said. “Even in the worst of times, when the economy was bad, people still want to come out and have a good time.”

In other key Saturday races, Werner Hagerty rode Sportive to victory in the Art Smith Memorial Stakes, Jose Guerrero aboard Legal Victory won the Prineville HBPA Thoroughbred Stakes, and Werner Hagerty closed out the night winning the Ben Woodward Memorial Stakes aboard General Day.

Jackie Smith and Scott Stewart were the leading owners at the race meet winning three races each, while Chuck Lindsey was the leading trainer with four wins.

Also contested on Saturday was the newly named Gloria Simonis Memorial Stakes, where Keepherrockin, ridden by Samuels, led wire-to-wire to take the victory.

Warm weather and the threat of thunder storms made preparing the track for the races tricky, but the rain held off, and the track held up throughout the race meet.

“The weather has been a little challenging being extremely hot, but also with a chance of thunder and lightning and rain showers,” said race chairperson Russ Deboodt. “It’s always tough to plan for. If you put down too much water and it rains you are in trouble. If you plan for the water and it doesn’t rain you are in trouble, but it worked out. The volunteers, led by Brian Connolly, have done a great job with the track.”

Deboodt added that it is the volunteers that make the Crooked River Roundup Race Meet Special, from those in the betting windows, to the course workers and everyone else behind the scene.

“You don’t always see them because they are done usually before anybody shows up, but we wouldn’t be able to do this without everyone’s help,” he said.
